This Unit was set up in 2009 as part of the reorganization of the Department of Medicine in order to provide high quality secondary care primarily for the population of Muscat, and to provide quality teaching of medical students from the Sultan Qaboos University, as well as training of the Omani interns and residents in Medicine under the Oman Medical Specialty Board.
The Male Medical Ward 1 and Female Medical Ward 2 cater to acute admissions of inpatients from the capital area as well as to the emergencies referred from healthcare facilities from the rest of the Sultanate. The Acute Medical Admissions Unit consists of High Dependency and general medical care areas, providing an adequate medical management and care for patients admitted with general medical conditions, such as uncomplicated chest infections, hypertension, stroke, vaso-occlusive crisis in sickle-cell disease, intoxications and envenomations, soft tissue infections, septicaemia, diabetes mellitus and its complications, and many other diseases. Most patients present with multiple medical problems, which is a special challenge in their management, and serve as excellent learning opportunities for medical residents.
The Acute Medical Admission Unit consists of four teams, A, B, C, and D, which admit alternately, once in 4 days. Generally, all admitted patients are expected to be managed within 4-5 days and either discharged home, or transferred to their local hospital or to a medical or surgical specialty team, depending on the principal pathology. Each team consists of two senior physicians (Senior Consultant, Senior Specialist) and a variable number of interns and residents doing their rotations in General Medicine. Regular activities of the teams include morning meetings where acute admission cases are reported and discussed, team grand rounds, post-admission rounds, team seminars and journal clubs, bedside teaching, as well as interdisciplinary meetings with other general medical teams and medical specialty teams and radiologists.
