FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

The clinical haematology services offered to patients at the Royal Hospital have expanded over the last decade to include outpatients, inpatients and day care facilities. All varieties of clinical haematology problems are dealt with, ranging from easy access to basic investigations, to specialised haematology work up, consultation and treatment on par with the latest technology offered in leading centers.

Specialised haematological investigations include bone marrow examination, flow-cytometry, cytogenetics, platelet function tests, thrombophilia screening, coagulation factors and inhibitors assays, haemoglobin electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography. Transfusions, chelation, pheresis, administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and specialised radiological investigations are rendered routinely in the day care facility dedicated to such services.

There is a fully developed day care facility for thalassemia and haemophilia patients. The day care approach has helped ease the pressure on outpatient clinics and inpatient service. This has enabled a larger number of patients to be seen in a short time in a cost effective manner.

In collaboration with the Medical Department, the department actively contributes to the management and care offered to Sickle Cell disease patients. Three beds in the Medical wards have been allocated for the inpatient management of benign Haematological conditions.

Two large clinics are conducted each week, which cater for general and malignant haematology, with access to state of the art investigations and treatment.

The inpatient service revolves around a six bedded unit with access to any number of beds in the hospital in case of need, and with full access to intensive care beds. The variety of cases seen, diagnosed and treated is on par with the highest quality tertiary care hospitals around the world.

The department is proud of its achievements in the field of haematology and continues to work towards improving and expanding the service. The high quality services provided, most of which were unavailable in Oman only few years ago, are now routine. The specialty is a popular medical field that attracts high quality Omani trainees, some of whom have finished their training and rejoined the department, thus enabling further expansion and development of the service. The department is actively engaged in training and continued professional development of its staff and trainees.
