The Dental Surgery Unit at the Royal Hospital is housed in the outpatient department. It is mainly intended for inpatients with dental and orofacial problems and also for those patients who simultaneously require the expertise of other specialties based at the Royal Hospital.

 WORKLOAD
The scope of work includes high quality curative and restorative dentistry, surgical and preventive dentistry for medically compromised and immuno-suppressed patients, those with HIV, hepatitis, bleeding disorders, and patients being prepared for cardiac surgery and renal transplantation. Dental treatment for pre and post radiotherapy and chemotherapy is also carried out. Such patients are referred to the Dental Surgery unit by other specialties at Royal Hospital and also by other hospitals and health centers. Inpatients and staff of the Royal Hospital are also seen for acute dental problems. In addition VIPs (the Royal Family members, Their Excellencies the Ministers/ Undersecretaries/ Ambassadors) attend the Royal Hospital for their routine dental treatments. Fillings both silver and synthetic, and a few crown and bridge, dentures are also carried out. The dental equipment has been recently refurbished with state- of- art units with all accessories.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITES
All the new dental graduates who join the Ministry of Health are posted to Royal Hospital for a month to get acquainted with the management and treatment of medically compromised and immuno- suppressed patients. Student nurses (DSA) are also sent on rotation from the Health Institute for a month’s training to get to know the specific job.
The Dental Surgeons participates in weekly CME activities conducted by the Dental department at Al Nahdha Hospital.
