INTERNAL MEDICINE
These 4 clinical units cater to inpatients from the capital area who are admitted to Royal Hospital for general medical problems. Each of these units has an associated sub-specialty: Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine, Endocrinology. Hence, besides General Medicine, these units provide tertiary care in their respective disciplines for inpatients, either on a consultation or take-over basis. With respect to outpatients, these units deal exclusively with their sub-specialty. The Rheumatology department covers both the adult and pediatric age-groups and manages the collagen vascular disease cases referred from all over the country. The Respiratory Medicine unit manages patients with diseases of airways, interstitial lung diseases, pleural diseases, pulmonary infections, sleep related disorders and respiratory malignancies. It performs bronchoscopy and has a modern lung function laboratory. Besides treating patients with complicated Diabetes and other complex endocrinal and metabolic diseases, the Endocrinology unit provides leadership to the National Diabetes Control programme. Plans have been finalized for a National Diabetes Center for management of adult and pediatrics cases of diabetes, diabetic foot and diabetic eye complications.
CARDIOLOGY
The Cardiology department is well staffed and is equipped with state-of0the-art facilities to manage the most complex of heart-related conditions. The department has a 8-bed Coronary Care Unit, 20-bed Post-CCU, outpatient non-invasive diagnostic laboratory (including treadmill, echocardiography, holter), 2 DSA cardiac cath labs. A comprehensive Cardiac Center is being set up as an extension to the Hospital.
GASTROENTEROLOGY
The department provides consultation services and selectively takes over cases specific to tertiary-care Gastroenterology. It endoscopy suite includes up-to-date video-endoscopic facilities for procedures in upper and lower GI diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, urea breath test, GI motility and pH monitoring.
NEPHROLOGY
The range of referred cases managed by the Department includes acute and chronic renal failure, glomerulonephritis and various complex systemic diseases such as SLE, granulomatosis, vasculitis, etc. Because renal failure consequent to Diabetes is a major problem in Oman, the Nephrology service is quite involved with acute haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, work up of patients for renal transplant surgery, and management of complications in renal transplant patients.
NEUROLOGY
The Neurology and Neuropsychiatric service manages a wide variety of neurological disorders such as strokes, epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, demyelinating and degenerative illnesses. Its investigative facilities include EEG, ENMG, evoked potentials studies, videotelemetry, CT scan and MRI. The department works closely with the Neurosurgery service at Khoula Hospital.
TEACHING
The Division provides a major input in the clinical teaching of medical students of the Sultan Qaboos University. It is also the main place of training of Omanis doing Residency in Medicine under the Oman Medical Specialty Board. Residents are further trained for the MRCP UK and Ireland examination. The Royal Hospital is a recognized examination center for the Part I and Part II MRCP examinations.
