The opening of the National Oncology Center in December 2004 commenced a new era for oncology services in Oman and was another significant milestone in the development of health care services in Oman. The large number of patients who were being referred abroad for prolonged radiotherapy treatment now has the advantage of high quality service, locally. Much planning and forethought produced state of the art facilities for cancer patients in Oman. Since opening, the administration of the Hospital and the staff of the centre have worked tirelessly to ensure that patients with cancer receive excellent and comprehensive quality services, supported by a commitment to education and research care.
The National Oncology Center has been built as an extension block of the Royal Hospital. It extends over an area of 5500 square metres and includes the following sections:
- Pediatric outpatient and chemotherapy area, with 2 consultation rooms, 4 daycare beds, phlebotomy and procedure rooms, playroom for sick children.
- Adult outpatient department, inclusive of 4 consultation rooms, inter-departmental patient and family counselling room, phlebotomy room, nurse station, waiting areas, and procedure room.
- Adult chemotherapy daycare facility, consisting of separate male and female wards, each with 6 beds, examination and procedure rooms.
- Nuclear medicine department, with 2 gamma cameras, exercise stress testing, hot labs, consulting rooms.
- Paediatric outpatient and chemotherapy day care beds with 2 consultation rooms, 4 beds, phlebotomy room, and procedure room.
- CT scan for cancer diagnosis and follow-up and for radiotherapy planning.
- Radiotherapy section, which includes 3DCRT, IMRT, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Microselectron High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR) and more recently IGRT. It is currently equipped with two Varian linear accelerators 2300 CD (dual energy with 120 leaf MLC) and 600 EX (Brain Lab M3 MLC). The facilities include an ARIA radiation information system integrated with the hospital information system, and Eclipse, Brain Lab iPlan and the Plato treatment planning systems. There are 2 simulators, a 16 slice Phillips Brilliance Big Bore with external movable lasers and Acuity Varian conventional simulator. There is a medical physics unit with all dosimetry and QA equipment to ensure the highest level of quality in radiotherapy services.
- Outpatient pharmacy and cytotoxic drugs reconstitution sterile unit
- Support facilities: medical records registration, tumour board conference room, cafeteria, etc.
Four cancer wards, with 124 beds, are being constructed on the first and second floors.



Departments
