GENERAL NATURE OF WORK CARRIED OUT

  • Admission of patients from endocrine and diabetic clinics.
  • Taking over of endocrine and diabetic patients (especially newly-discovered) from other units on a daily-basis.
  • Endocrine, Metabolic Diseases and Diabetic clinics two per week on Saturdays and Tuesday.
  • Diabetic Education clinic every Monday for Type-1 diabetic patients.
  • Diabetic Education on a daily basis.
  • Management of National Diabetes Control Programme of Oman.
  • Pilot study: National registration of all new diabetic patients and accumulation of data (started in April 1997).


SPECIFIC WORK

  • Provision of diabetic education directed towards patient involvement and prevention of complications. This includes all out-patients and in-patients, including pregnant diabetic women. This is carried out by doctors, diabetic-nurse-educator and the nutritionist.
  • Promotion of self-monitoring of blood glucose technology, insulin-pens etc.
  • Daily availability of dynamic endocrine function tests and oral glucose-tolerance-tests (OGTT). The endocrine nurse facilitates this both for out-patients and in-patients.


EDUCATION AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • The Consultants are involved in the teaching program of Medical Students from Sultan Qaboos University and Residents from Oman Medical Board Committee, Nurses and other Health-workers. The Sr. Consultants are affiliated to Sultan Qaboos University as Senior Lecturers in the grade of Clinical Associate Professors.
  • Clinical meetings/ journal clubs/ mortality/ clinical-audit/ radiology meeting from 0730 to 0830 hours.
  • Endocrine Meeting on the third Monday of each month from 1400 to 1600 hours, alternating with University Hospital.
  • Complications of diabetes in the newly discovered diabetics.
  • Gestational diabetes.
  • Osteoporosis and lipid abnormalities in the post-menopausal women.
  • Establishment of “Diabetic-foot” clinic with vascular surgeon.
  • OGTT – Data comparing ADA and WHO criteria.
  • Microalbuminuria amongst diabetes and hypertensive patients in Oman.
  • Thyroid disorders in pregnancy.
  • Hirsutism in Oman.
