The Central Library of the Ministry of Health, established in 1970, was the first medical library in Oman. It was initially housed on the ground floor of the MoH-HQ building and was shifted to the Royal Hospital when the latter was commissioned in 1987. During the last few years, medical libraries have been set up at major hospitals in the capital and at each Regional hospital. However, because of its wealth of material, the Royal Hospital medical library continues to function as a reference library for the country.
The Library has about 5000 printed books in the general and reference sections. It also has in its holding 260 printed journal titles with back issues dated to the 1950’s. A large number of instructional videos, slides and CDs have also been acquired.
In keeping with the changing technology and to provide better library access to its staff, the Royal Hospital commissioned its e-library on 13th April 2009 at a formal function presided by H.E. Dr. Ali Moosa Mohammed, the Minister of Health. This service includes 15 medical databases containing more than 3000 specialized medical books and journals. A portal was built to allow a single password authentication system to log in to all these e-resources supplied by different publishers so that full text articles can be accessed by users from any place within Oman or abroad at any time through the internet.
