ACTIVITIES

The Medico social work section deals with the psychosocial problems of patients, including their personal and family needs, in so far as they compromise on their health and on effective delivery of hospital services. These patients are referred to the Social Workers from different wards and from out patient clinics. The specific nature of medico-social involvement includes:

Expediting discharge of long stay patients: Annually about 50 such cases are referred to the Social Worker to look into and resolve. The case is worked up through interviews with the patient and relative/s, visit to the patient's home in many cases, mobilizing community support, approaching the Ministry of Social Affairs or seeking donors to finance for certain medical equipment (eg. portable suction machine, nebulizer, oxygen concentrator, syringe drivers, wheelchairs, walking frame, etc.), transfer to other MoH healthcare facilities, etc.

Liaison with the Ministry of Social Affairs: The Social Workers pursue the applications of needy patients for transport / sickness / food allowances and for financial support for purchasing equipment for home care. About 100 such cases are processed a year.
The Medico Social Workers have also approached the Ministry of Awqaf through their department of Bait Al Zakaa to seek some form of financial help to the families. Recommendation for financial help from the Ministry of Social Affairs is also made for poor patients who have to commute frequently to the hospital for follow up of chronic ailments related to oncology, renal failure, hematology and other cases.

Abandoned Babies: Occasionally babies are brought by the Royal Oman Police or found abandoned in the hospital campus. The Medico Social Workers liaise with the Ministry of Social Affairs for adoption of these children.

Child Abuse cases: The Ministry of Social Affairs' department of women and child care is contacted to investigate reported cases of child abuse, and to follow up through home visits and proper monitoring.
