ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
To facilitate efficient administration, the Nursing Department is divided into 12 units, and functions on a line-manager model.

These units are as follows:
Nursing Administration
Medical Unit -  124 beds plus 8 HD beds
Surgical Unit -  126 beds plus small Renal Dialysis Unit
Maternity Unit -  130 beds plus SCBU with 30 cots
Paediatric Unit -  90 beds plus 8 HD beds
Critical Care Unit -  16 ICU beds plus 8 Post Cardiac Surgery
ER and OPD -  Paediatric and Adult
Oncology Centre/Oncology Ward/Special Nursing/VIP -  56 beds
Cardiology/Cardiac Cath Lab -  24 beds
Operating Theatres  -  9 Theatres

 Approximately 1200 registered nurses are employed at Royal Hospital. Working with the Omanis are Nurses from 14 different countries, including India, Philippines, Jordan and Iran. Additionaly, there are 147 medical orderlies supporting the nurses in patient service.
Student nurses from the Nursing Institutes are assigned to Royal Hospital for their practicum.
Omani nurses are sponsored by the Ministry of Health to attend post graduate courses within the country as well as abroad.
Staff recruitment is done at Royal Hospital in liaison with the Department of Personnel and the Ministry of Health.
A staff allocation system is in operation.  Nursing assignments are determined by patient census and classification/ dependency categories.
All contracts are signed on an annual basis, with optional renewal.
Nursing staff are bound by M.O.H. contracts as rules of the Civil Service Ministry and policies of the Royal Hospital.

NURSING IN-HOUSE TRAINING

There is a very active programme for all nursing staff, including compulsory BCLS certification arranged through Training & Education dept.
There are ongoing systems being developed to monitor and evaluate Health & Safety Precautions, Risk Management & Total Quality Management.
All staff are preceptored for a period of 1-3 months depending on progress at ward level.
In house training program for High dependency, Renal Transplant and Oncology Courses are conducted quarterly by Clinical Facilitation dept., in order to raise the standard of nursing care to the patients.
In addition to on the job training, regular study days, clinical updates, workshops, seminars are conducted pertinent to the various clinical specialties.

DISCHARGE PLANNING
Nurses take active role in assisting doctors for early discharge of patients based on the medical condition to the respective Wilayat/ health centre and follow up the case through community nurses, social worker etc., until the situation is stable in order to avoid blocking beds for longer period.

WORKING HOURS
There is 35 hours, 5 day working week  (140 hours / 4 weeks for shift workers).
A standard pay scale is complemented by a generous benefit package.

STAFF FACILITIES
There is a large accommodation village within the hospital grounds, for expatriate staff.
Recreational facilities include a gym, soccer field, tennis courts, swimming pool, badminton and squash courts.
A bank, autobank and small supermarket are all available within the hospital complex.
