Oct 9, 2012. Major health plan underway: Oman aims to have 346 government healthcare facilities, including 70 hospitals and a medical city, by the end of 2015, said Dr Ali Talib Al Hinai, Undersecretary of Planning, Ministry of Health.

Addressing the Oman Investment Forum yesterday, Dr Ali said that all this is part of the Health Vision 2050 which is aimed at radically improving the healthcare facilities in the country. He noted: "Till 2010, Oman had 236 government healthcare facilities including 50 hospitals with 4,692 beds."

On 3rd October 2012, the Pediatric Cardiology Unit launched its Percutaneous Pulmonary Valve Implantation (PPVI) program. This procedure is a new treatment option for patients with dysfunctional right ventricle outflow tract (RVOT). It aims at avoiding or minimizing the need for open heart surgery, while at the same time improving patient’s clinical condition and preventing complications.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to control blood sugar. Diabetes can be caused by too little insulin, resistance to insulin, or both. To understand diabetes, it is important to first understand the normal process by which food is broken down and used by the body for energy. Several things happen when food is digested:
A sugar called glucose enters the bloodstream. Glucose is a source of fuel for the body.
An organ called the pancreas makes insulin. The role of insulin is to move glucose from the bloodstream into muscle, fat, and liver cells, where it can be used as fuel.
