- 16 Hematology/Oncology beds (inclusive of 4 isolation rooms and 4 high dependency).
- 4 Day Transfusion beds (Room 19)
- 4 Daycare Chemotherapy beds in Oncology Centre.
- Isolation rooms are used for protective isolation of febrile and neutropenic patients as well as for contact isolation of infected patients. Varicella, herpes zoster, measles infections are isolated in the general Pediatric Wards (to prevent cross infection to other Oncology patients).
- As an indicator of workload, approximately 1100 Hematology and 600 Oncology patients are admitted per year with 80 – 100 new oncology patients diagnosed per year.

Sunday: Oncology clinic by Dr. Nagwa ElBanna, Sr. Specialist + Specialist or MO
Monday: Oncology clinic by Dr. Eileen Tomas, Consultant + Specialist or MO
Tuesday: Haematology clinic by Specialist + MO
Wednesday: Haematology clinic by Specialist + MO
Chemotherapy & procedures like bone marrow aspiration and intrathecal chemo are given in outpatient department as day cases.

Saturday:
07:30-08:30: Daily admission rounds and case presentation at PW3 Day Room.
08:00-08:30: Surgical/Oncology Rounds, PW1 Seminar Room.Ward rounds with Specialist.
08:00-14:30: Oncology Clinic by Sr. Specialist + Specialist or MO
Booked chemotherapy admissions, and procedures (bone marrow aspiration, and trephine biopsy, lumbar punctures for diagnostic or intrathecal chemotherapy).
Sunday:
07:30-08:30: Admission rounds and case presentation at PW3 Day Room.
09:00-11:00: Grand rounds by Consultant with all medical, nursing staff, social worker and clinical pharmacist.
08:00-14:30: Oncology clinic by Sr. Specialist + Specialist or MO
Admissions for elective chemotherapy and routine blood transfusions (Thalassemias/Sickle Cell Anemia with specific indication).
Monday:
07:30-08:30: Division of Child Health Grand Rounds, in Auditorium.
Ward Rounds with Senior Specialist and Admissions as above.
Team clinic: Maximum 15 patients per doctor.
08:00-14:30 Oncology Clinic: New referrals, outpatient chemotherapy, follow up of acute & long term patients by Consultant and Specialist or MO.
Tuesday:
07:30-08:30: Radiology Rounds at PW3 Day Room.
Ward Rounds and Admissions with Senior Specialist.
1200: Teaching Seminars/Journal Club/Departmental Meeting - PW1 Seminar Room.
Haematology Clinic: New referrals for diagnostic work up, follow up of acute and chronic cases of ITP, Sickle Cell, Anemias and bleeding diathesis
Wednesday:
07:30-08:30: Admission rounds and case presentation at PW3 Day Room.
09:00-1100: Grand Rounds by Consultant with all medical, nursing staff, social worker and clinical pharmacist.
08:00 – 14:30 – Haematology clinic by Specialist + MO

Daily activities include:
- Acute and elective admission for work-up of new cases, and scheduled cycles of chemotherapy and procedures (BM, IT therapy).
- Discharges.
- Accompany patients to Radiology Department for sedation prior to scanning procedures.
- Instruct patients on use of home infusion pumps.
- Counsel parents regarding: consent for diagnostic procedures (BM, LP); new diagnosis, plan of treatment, potential side effects of cytotoxics, expected prognosis; consent to start chemotherapy; status of acutely ill prior, relapsed patients; inform regarding terminal/palliative care and DNR status. Counseling is done with Consultant, Social worker and Resident or Intern.
- Personal communication with Radiologist to request for urgent imaging procedures.
- Follow up laboratory / histopathology / imaging results.
- Follow up of absconding patients (through Ward Coordinator).
- Communicating with interior hospital doctors regarding Oncology patients referred back to them or new patients being referred to Royal Hospital.
- Consultation on referrals from other Pediatric Wards.
EDUCATIONAL AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
- Bed side teaching of 7th year + 5th year medical students on Saturdays 11:00 – 13:00.
- Lectures on Haematology-Oncology for DCH & MRCP (UK) candidates.
- Prepare cases for DCH and MRCP candidates.
- In-Service Education Lectures to Nurses, Physiotherapists and Pharmacists.
- Lectures on Cancer Chemotherapy for Oman Specialty Board.
- Conduct with Pediatric Surgeons, Surgical-Oncology Meetings to discuss new referrals of newly diagnosed, acutely ill patients with surgical problems, and follow up of jointly managed patients.
- Participate as a member of various committees – National Cancer Committee, Blood Utilization Committee, Tumor Board, Quality Assurance, Pain Management
- Attend various Local and International Workshops and Conferences throughout the year.
