The unit provides tertiary level care for general paediatric patients with complications, functions as the key unit for infectious diseases and immunological disorders for the whole country, and charts out guidelines and policies for the management of these problems. It is actively involved in promoting infection control policies of the hospital and of the Ministry. Further, it helps in charting out hospital policies in antibiotic use and other policy matters related to infectious diseases.

WORKLOAD

The main work involves management of inpatients and consultation for patients with complex infections in Ped ICU, Neonatal ICU, pediatric oncology, post-transplant and other immune compromised states, and defice infection (e.g. VP shunt, port-a-cath, line-sepsis, etc.). The unit also conducts a specialised referral clinic once a week.

The type of cases admitted are children with recurrent infections for investigation, children with congenital immune deficiencies like agammaglobulinemia, common variable immune deficiencies, T cell deficiencies, polymorph dysfunctions like chronic granulomatous disease, Job syndrome, compliment problems like hereditary angioneurotic edema, etc.

The unit is the focal point in the country for the management of children with retroviral infection. There are a considerable number of patients with Acquired Immune deficiencies.

The infectious disease load is mainly complicated bacterial meningitis, enteric fevers, malaria, kala-azar, tuberculosis, varicella infections and kawasaki disease, in addition to the above said immunological conditions admitted with opportunistic infections.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The Unit takes part in the teaching of undergraduate students of the Sultan Qaboos University - both the fifth year and the seventh year batches. It is also involved in teaching the nurses, taking classes in the CME sessions organized by the teaching department. Dr. George takes a leading role in conducting DCH (Glasgow) Course and MRCP Part I and II Courses in Oman.
A weekly seminar on Tuesdays is conducted on the current topics of interest. The Unit contributed considerably in organizing the quarterly update conferences conducted by the Division of Child Health for the interior doctors.
