The Department of Urology is staffed by 3 Consultants, 4 Senior Specialists, 4 Specialists and 1 Medical Officer. The department has 24 beds: 18 male beds in the Nephro Urology Ward and 6 beds in the Female Surgical Ward. Urological patients are also admitted to the Special Nursing Ward, High Dependency and VIP Wards. The department is a tertiary referral centre for urological cases serving the whole country. Renal transplants are performed regularly in conjunction with the Nephrology Department, which share beds on the same ward. The departmental facilities include an ESWL Unit with 2 Lithotriptors and a Urodynamic Section with ultrasonography for transrectal prostatic biopsies. The department is actively involved in academic activities including teaching medical students, interns, surgical and gynaecological residents. All consultants have an affiliation with the Sultan Qaboos University and Oman Medical Specialty Board as Senior Lecturers, and some are registered as qualified examiners with the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons. A weekly continuing medical education program is carried out and urological symposia are arranged annually. Clinical auditing is organized as part of the Surgical Division activities.
